To Best Serve Today's Students, Go Cross-Curricular

Kids DiscoverDive Brief:

  • A cross-curricular approach helps promote critical-thinking, problem-solving and creativity, and it will help prepare today's students for jobs that do not exist, according to the latest installment of an eSchool News series looking at ways to better serve Gen Z students.
  • Ditching the traditional textbook for a series of shorter articles — and using more visual materials like maps, photos and charts to teach the material — is also effective.

  • Online curricula can help promote deeper investigation of a topic and help students make connections between different subjects on their own.

Dive Insight:

A siloed approach to education in which students learn one subject at a time for prescribed blocks is no longer the most effective way to reach students. At both the higher ed and K-12 levels, finding ways to promote interdisciplinary study helps to prepare more well-rounded students and happier future employers.

Today's students are the first generation who are totally digital natives, and for many, their ability to navigate content online exceeds that of educators. Embracing online content gives students access to a broader range of perspectives and can help compensate for some gaps in traditional textbooks, but educators will have to take care to help students to better identify what's useful and what's garbage online.
